QR codes built on editable short links
A dynamic QR code contains a short link, not your final URL. Print it once, then change where it goes, switch it off or see how often it is scanned.
How a dynamic short link works
- 1
You create a dynamic code. It gets a short address of the form /r/<code> on this site, and the QR image encodes that address.
- 2
Someone scans it. Their phone opens the short link and we check that the code is active, not expired and under its scan limit.
- 3
If a password is set, the visitor enters it first. Otherwise we record the scan and forward them to your destination.
- 4
You edit the destination in your dashboard whenever you want. Nothing needs reprinting.
What you can control
Edit the destination
Point the same printed code at a new page, file or app link whenever you like. The short link itself never changes.
Pause and resume
Switch a code off without deleting it. Visitors see a notice that the code is paused.
Expiry date
Set a date after which the code stops forwarding, handy for promotions and event tickets.
Scan limit
Stop the code after a set number of scans, for example the first 500 redeems of an offer.
Password
Ask for a password before showing the destination. Link previews never reveal protected content.
Device and country rules
On website codes, send iPhone, Android or visitors from chosen countries to a different URL, with the main link as the default.
What you cannot do
- Use your own domain or choose the characters in the short code.
- Create short links without a QR code attached.
- Keep links working after the account has lapsed.
Short link questions
What does the short link look like?
It is this site's address followed by /r/ and a seven-character code, for example /r/k7mx2pq. The code is generated for you and cannot be customised.
Can I use my own domain?
No. Custom domains are not supported, so every short link uses this site's domain. If a branded address is essential, a dynamic code is not the right fit today.
Is this a general URL shortener?
No. Short links are created as part of a dynamic QR code, which also gives you the QR image. There is no separate link-only shortener.
What happens when a code is paused, expired or over its limit?
Visitors see a plain page saying the code is paused, has expired or has reached its scan limit, rather than being forwarded.
Does the redirect slow scanning down?
The extra hop is one request to our server before the browser is sent on. The printed QR image holds a short link, so it also tends to be less dense and easier to scan than one holding a very long URL.
What if my subscription ends?
Dynamic short links only forward while the account is active. After that, visitors see a notice that the owner needs to renew. Static QR codes are unaffected because they never use a short link.
