Which barcode format do I need?
Code 128
Shipping labels, inventory, asset tags and anything that mixes letters and numbers.
Code 39
Industrial, military and automotive labelling, ID badges. Wider than Code 128 but very forgiving.
EAN-13
Retail products sold worldwide. Requires a GS1-assigned company prefix.
EAN-8
Small retail packages where an EAN-13 will not fit. Also needs a GS1-assigned number.
UPC-A
Retail products sold in the US and Canada. Requires a GS1-assigned company prefix.
UPC-E
Small US/Canada retail packages: a compressed UPC-A for numbers with enough zeros.
ITF-14
Outer cartons and cases that hold retail items, printed on corrugated board.
ISBN-13
Books. An ISBN-13 is an EAN-13 with the Bookland prefix; the ISBN itself comes from your national ISBN agency.
Data Matrix
Electronics, medical devices and tiny parts where a linear barcode is too big.
GS1-128
Logistics labels carrying GTINs, dates, batch and serial numbers.
Selling in shops? EAN and UPC numbers must come from a GS1-assigned company prefix. This tool encodes the number you give it; it does not issue or register one.
Barcode questions
Can I use these barcodes on products sold in shops?
The barcodes are technically valid and will scan, but retail EAN-13, UPC-A and similar numbers must be built from a company prefix licensed by GS1. This tool does not issue or register numbers, so do not invent them for retail products. Get your prefix from GS1 before printing packaging.
Does the generator calculate the check digit?
Yes. For EAN-13, EAN-8, UPC-A, UPC-E, ITF-14 and ISBN-13 you can enter the number without its last digit and it is calculated for you. If you enter the full number, the check digit is verified and a wrong one is rejected instead of being printed.
Which barcode format should I choose?
Use Code 128 for internal labels and shipping with mixed letters and digits, EAN-13 or UPC-A for retail items, ITF-14 for cartons, GS1-128 for logistics labels with dates and batch numbers, and Data Matrix when the label is very small.
Is my data sent to a server?
No. Barcodes are generated entirely in your browser. No account is needed and nothing is uploaded or stored.
What is the best download format?
SVG stays sharp at any size and is best for professional printing. PNG is exported at high resolution for documents and web use, and PDF is handy for print shops that will not accept images.
Is a barcode the same as a QR code?
No. Traditional barcodes hold a short number or text and are read in one direction by laser or camera scanners. A QR code is 2D, holds much more (such as links) and is read by phone cameras. For links, use the QR generator.
Need to link to a website, Wi-Fi or contact card?
Barcodes hold short numbers. For links and richer content, create a QR code: free, styled to your brand, and no account needed for static codes.
