What is Data Matrix?
A Data Matrix is a grid of square modules with an L-shaped finder on two edges and alternating clock marks on the others. It uses Reed-Solomon error correction, so a scratched or partly dirty symbol often still reads.
It can be printed far smaller than a linear barcode of the same content. Unlike QR codes it is read by industrial imagers and many phone scanner apps, but phone camera apps do not always open it automatically.

How small can a Data Matrix be printed?
It depends on the reader and print method, but individual modules should stay comfortably larger than the printer's dot size. Test with a real reader rather than trusting a minimum on paper.
Does Data Matrix need a licence?
No. The format is open and free to use. Any identifiers you encode, like a GS1 GTIN, are still subject to their own issuing rules.
