Free ITF-14 barcode generator

ITF-14 is the barcode printed on outer cartons and cases. It carries a 14-digit GTIN that tells warehouses and distributors what is inside the box.

Barcode format

13 digits, or 14 with the check digit. The 14th digit is calculated for you.

Check digit 9 calculated and appended.

Keep strong contrast (dark bars on a light background) and leave a clear margin, or scanners may fail to read it.

A GTIN-14 is built from the GTIN of the item inside, so its prefix is licensed by GS1. This tool does not issue numbers.

What is ITF-14?

ITF-14 uses Interleaved 2 of 5, which encodes digits in pairs, so the length must be even. A 14-digit GTIN-14 fits exactly. The first digit is a packaging indicator describing the level of packing, followed by the product's own GTIN and a check digit.

Corrugated board prints unevenly, so ITF-14 is traditionally surrounded by a heavy bearer bar frame. That frame keeps the print plate pressure even and stops partial reads at the ends.

When to use ITF-14

Outer cartons, cases and trays that hold several retail items.

Distribution and warehouse scanning where the carton, not the shelf item, is counted.

Not for single consumer products at the checkout; use EAN-13 or UPC-A there.

How to make a ITF-14 barcode

  1. 1

Enter the 13 digits of your GTIN-14 without the last digit, or all 14.

  2. 2

The check digit is calculated and appended, or verified if you gave all 14.

  3. 3

Download SVG for flexographic artwork, or PNG for a quick proof.

  4. 4

Keep generous margins and test the printed carton; rough board reduces contrast.

ITF-14 questions

How do I build a GTIN-14 from my product barcode?

Choose a packaging indicator digit from 1 to 8, then add the first 12 digits of your item's EAN-13 or UPC-A, and a new check digit is calculated. Enter the first 13 digits here and the 14th is added.

What are the black bars around an ITF-14?

Bearer bars. They protect against uneven pressure on corrugated cardboard and prevent a scanner reading only part of the symbol. They are standard practice on the printed carton.

Why must ITF-14 have an even number of digits?

Interleaved 2 of 5 draws one digit in the bars and the next in the spaces, so symbols come in pairs. 14 digits is seven pairs.
